Getting closer to our food...

Green has come to Baltimore in many ways. Down the street from where I live a group of neighbors started an urban gardening project. The farmer’s markets downtown and near Hopkins are thriving. Trees are being planted. Recycling has been stepped up.

I encounter often during teaching about the history of farming in the United States and economics in general a lack of connection between students and their food. This is no wonder considering that the farm is so far from the city (even though it’s not— though for most of Baltimore’s very provincial kids, it might as well be across an ocean given their exposure). This is probably not so much a new thing, the city and the country always having such vital connections between market and supplier. Modern life just obscures it, dressing it in fancy packaging and such.

This story from the Sun highlights an awesome way to bring this into sharper relief with students: to actually have them participate in food growing. This makes me excited.
